For the sixth year, Jose Ortega participated in the Chinese New Year Parade. A new character mask was created in honor of the Year of the Snake. Students decorated umbrellas and created snake inspired artwork for the standards.

Thanks to the energetic parents who organized the parade, created and wore the amazing masks, helped with the characters and images on the umbrellas, and carried the standards and banners. Thanks to the Dim Sum Dancers for being line leaders, to the students who did artwork for the umbrellas and posters, and most of all thanks to our great kids for learning their part and for representing our school.

In addition to the parade, the school celebrated with a Lunar New Year Fair hosted by the fourth and fifth grade Mandarin immersion classes.

Every classroom was able to attend the fair and have some fun with a shuttlecock game (jianzi), chopsticks, tangrams, and washable Chinese character tattoos. Xin Nian Kuai Le! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Lunar New Year!

The Jose Ortega Family Health Night had many fun activities to encourage thinking about healthy choices. Everyone was able to sample tomato-mozzarella salad and kale and brown rice asian salad, trace the path of a pea from seed to table in a live display, fold an origami seed packet to take home peas, compete in a compost and recycling race, make a veggie face snack, practice yoga for kids, play the build-a-plate food sorting game, start a fruit and veggie diary, and more. The next family night will be held in April and the theme will be science.

In the spring of 2012 our whole school participated in a bookmaking project led by artist in residence, Aiko Cuneo. The kindergarten through third grade classes made individual handmade books.

The 4th and 5th grade classes worked together on a book to learn more about people who are involved with the Oceanview, Ingleside, and Merced Heights (OMI) communities. These people included District 11 Supervisor John Avalos, Parents for Public Schools Community Outreach Coordinator Cindy Choy, and Peter Vaernet, a resident of Merced Heights and founder of Brooks Park. JoLynn Washington is the principal of Jose Ortega Elementary School (JOES). Mr. Edwards is a longtime resident of OMI and worked for many years as the custodian at JOES. Jonathan Silverman is the gardening coordinator at JOES. Maria Elena Jeremias is a grandmother of two students at JOES and is a gardener in the Brooks Park community gardens. Minnie and Lovie Ward were OMI community activists.

Click the image to download the book

Students in 4th and 5th grade interviewed the community members, wrote in groups, and made drawings to illustrate the book. The project was made possible by a Target Arts and Culture in Schools Grant obtained by the PTA.

An additional two teachers were trained through “Homegrown Training,” where Columbia University representatives come to SF to provide training. This way of teaching combines explicit instruction in reading strategies with opportunities for students to practice each reading strategy independently, with a peer, and in small groups. Teachers read-alouds, guided reading, and independent reading times are structured into the daily schedule.

Our principal reports that the students are learning to read comprehensively as well as just loving reading! She also states, “I am planning to bring a Homegrown Training to our school in the summer. I am meeting with four other principals and we are hoping to train up to 50 teachers. This means that all Jose Ortega teachers will receive training in Readers Workshop before the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. I am very excited about this!”

On October 17, JOES welcomed representatives from Raising a Reader and the Masons to an assembly launching the Raising a Reader program for Jose Ortega’s kindergarteners. Students got to participate in story time, and parents were educated in the benefits of reading with their children at home.

Raising a Reader is a nationally known program that has until now been geared to 0-5 year olds and their families. Students bring home a sturdy red bag of books each week to read with their families, and exchange their book bags for new ones each week. With the launch of this program at Jose Ortega, Raising a Reader is moving toward implementing their program in Kindergartens throughout the United States. The Masons organization is partnering with Raising a Reader to fund on a national level. Since Jose Ortega School has an existing partnership with Masons Lodge No. 1, we are the fortunate recipients of the very first Kindergarten Raising a Reader program! Thank you Masons for funding this program for our students!

The California Masonic Lodge #1, which provided us with a new computer lab last year, has given us $3,000 for new ELMO machines. We are very grateful to the Masons for their generous gift!

ELMO (Electricity Light Machine Organization) machines are the modern version of overhead projectors. They combine a digital video camera with a digital projector. Instead of creating transparencies, the teachers are able to place books or manipulatives directly under the digital camera and have them projected onto the wall. It can be used for students to present their work to the class, to turn any book into an oversize read-along, or to give everyone a close up view of how the teacher is counting coins for a math lesson.

The PTA and Principal Washington are working to raise funds to provide ELMOs for every classroom by the end of the year.

Our playstructure received an $85,000 makeover during the summer, and the kids are having fun trying out the new elements. The swinging monkey bar rings are especially popular.

Gardening

The classroom gardening projects have already begun sprouting with new planters outside many of the classrooms. The students have been learning about soils and fertilizers, planting fall vegetables, and releasing ladybugs this week.

Football Field Day

On Friday September 10, our students energetically participated in a football field day. Our PE teacher trained fifth graders as coaches, and they led K-5th grade classes in football competitions. The activities included “Partner Toss Step-back”, “40 Yard Touchdown Dash”, “How Far Can You Throw?”, and a “Football Obstacle Course”. The students relished the chance to compete for the fastest course and the farthest throw and practiced teamwork with passing and relay racing.

We go outside to walk, run, and play daily, complemented by at least one hundred minutes of physical education weekly and ongoing classes on nutrition, health, and the importance of lifelong wellness.

Our nutritionist also introduced the school to a delicious fall vegetable, butternut squash, by providing butternut squash soup samples at lunch.

On April 22, 2010, the Jose Ortega students began their Earth Day celebration with a recycling drive sponsored by the student council. An environmental grant acquired by one of our parents brought us a new greenhouse, as well as a take-home bag of books on the environment for every child. The classrooms took turns visiting the greenhouse to deliver seedlings they had planted as class projects. They learned about how greenhouses work and checked out the different plants being grown by each class. The students will be taking care of the seedlings until May 22, when they will be sold at the Umoja Carnival.

On April 13, 2010, the Exploratorium came to Jose Ortega to lead our annual Family Science Night. This year the topic was the science of sound. The students learned about sound waves, vibration, pitch, and amplification. We talked through balloons, listened to giant tuning forks (bicycle forks), made straws whistle at different pitches by making them different lengths, made sound sandwiches and sound spinners with vibrating rubber bands, created cuícas out of plastic cups and string, and built saxophone style membraneophones. It was a fun and musical science night!

What is Umoja? It is the Swahili word for “unity”. On March 5, 2010 Jose Ortega students participated in our annual Umoja Day, which is a day of celebrating cultures.

During an assembly of multicultural performances, classrooms sang songs in English and Chinese. Students played piano and violin, performed lion dances, Irish stepdancing, and student choreographed dances. They sang solos, recited poetry, and performed karate and capoiera. The show ended with the humorous and energetic annual lion dance performance by Mr. John, our custodian.

After the performance, parents brought food to share in an international feast. The dishes ranged from homemade sushi to lumpia, from Swedish blueberry soup to chicken biryani. Some of the parents were so inspired by the feast that they decided to compile an international, unity in diversity cookbook with the recipes from families’ Umoja dishes. The cookbook will be for sale at the Umoja Carnival on May 22, 2010.
[[Show as slideshow]]

Jose Ortega Master Greening Plan and Recent Greening Grants

Our school community is very excited about the recent unveiling of our Master Greening Plan. Our ambitious plan, created with the assistance of Friends of the Urban Forest, will transform our large asphalt play yard into a park that includes a greenhouse, additional edible gardens, a native grass meadow, a meandering crushed-granite track, an amphitheater, a tree grove, picnic benches and quiet areas all without losing valuable space for our students to learn, play and exercise. The plan also includes installing a native garden with teaching areas in front of the school, installing a water garden and refurbishing our many planting areas. The Master Greening Plan will aid us in writing and receiving greening grants.

Jose Ortega was selected to participate in the SFUSD Green Teams program. With the help of the SFUSD Sustainability Department and a PG&E Bright Ideas grant, the Green Teams are supported by Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI), an environmental non-profit based in Marin that empowers schools to reduce pollution and save money through resource efficiency and clean energy. SEI will work closely with our schools to:

improve waste diversion to at least 85%,

provide us with monthly utility and diversion data,

help us create monthly newsletters, and

make sure we have the resources we need to be a successful, sustainable green team.

Our school will become a certified “Green School” after completing the program.

In addition, Jose Ortega is the recipient of the “Tap the Sky” grant from the city of San Francisco. In late summer or early fall 2010, rainwater collection cisterns will be installed at the school. Harvesting and recycling water will be incorporated into our science curriculum and help us reduce our gardening water consumption.

We also have on-going community gardening days where our families meet at the school to trim shrubs, pull weeds, play in the dirt, plant flowers, and help implement the pieces of our greening plan.

On February 27, 2010 Jose Ortega Elementary once again participated in San Francisco’s Chinese New Year parade. Fifty children from kindergarten through fifth grade marched in the event. They carried tiger-striped umbrellas and tiger themed posters, all of which were decorated by student volunteers. With assistance from parent Alex Hosmer, the children also created the mascot’s tiger mask, which began its life as a bicycle helmet.

Parent Jeanne Hughes organized and choreographed the parade routine, which included a special role for the school’s “Shining Star Dancers”.

It was an absolutely fantastic experience for students, parents, and teachers alike. The school’s participation in the San Francisco Chinese New Year’s parade is becoming an important and cherished Jose Ortega Tradition!

The song “Do Re Mi” could be heard echoing down the halls of Jose Ortega as the kindergarten students learned about musical scales. Parent Alicia Yang, who leads the kindergarten music enrichment, used boomwhackers, tuned plastic percussion tubes, to walk the students through playing scales. Ms. Yang is a professional violinist who plays with the SF Symphony and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, among other ensembles. She also teaches violin.

Ms. Yang says, “Having already taught Music Time sessions at my daughter’s preschool, I was comfortable volunteering to do something similar when she entered Jose Ortega last fall. Since the SF Symphony’s AIM program, of which JOES is a participant, doesn’t include the Kindergarten grade level, it was a natural niche to fill. I’m so glad to be able to contribute to Jose Ortega Elementary by teaching a monthly music time for all the K classes. Music instruction can build self-esteem, improve spatial concepts, and improve reading ability.”

Her goals for the music time are “for the children to get to hear live instrumental music and participate in music-making themselves. I introduce basic concepts of rhythm and pitch, and get the kids to compose for each other and work as a team. I want them to observe the natural materials instruments are made from and show how they work to create sound.”

What have been the children’s favorite parts? “All of it! Getting to try a violin, and using the Boomwhackers sound tubes.”

In March, Ms. Yang’s husband, Amos, joined her at kindergarten music time to demonstrate the cello. He’s a cellist with the San Francisco Symphony, and he played for the students, using musical games to demonstrate concepts of volume, tempo, and vibrato. He showed them that a cello can play both very high notes and very low ones, and that it can be both very quiet and very loud. The students had many musical requests for Amos including “ABC”, “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, and “Spiderman”. He also chose some of the songs, such as Brahms’s Lullaby, and asked them how each one made them feel.

The students were full of questions for Amos. They wanted to know if a cello is the same as a big violin, why it has a “long pointy thing at the bottom” (the endpin), and whether he could play it like a guitar. The children had a great time; they were very engaged and seemed to truly appreciate the chance to learn about this fascinating musical instrument.

Jose Ortega’s grades 1-5 participate in the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures in Music (AIM) program. The PTA provided the funds for instructional materials for kindergarten music enrichment.
